Dogs of New Paltz

Dogs of New Paltz features the friendliest, most adventurous dogs located across the New Paltz area. This week’s featured dog is a 6-year-old Spanish greyhound named Joan Rivers!

When Joan Rivers isn’t chasing squirrels or serving looks on walks with owner Liam Neuby, she can be found fast asleep at home.

Name and breed

It’s not every day that you get to meet a celebrity, and I sadly didn’t meet any last Tuesday. I did however run into a sweet 6-year-old galgo by the name of Joan Rivers! A galgo (or Spanish greyhound) is an ancient hunting breed that dates back to the Middle Ages!

About Joan Rivers

Joan, a retired hunting dog, was rescued by her owner Liam Neuby when he read about mistreatment of galgos in Spain. After they’ve been through a few hunting seasons, hunters tend to discard of their galgos by either leaving them on the street or euthanizing them.

Joan’s Pasttimes

Luckily, Joan Rivers did not meet this fate! Although she’s retired, Joan hasn’t lost her stride as she loves spending her free time chasing squirrels (sometimes reaching speeds of up to 40 mph) When she’s not hunting squirrels, Joan also loves to hunt cheese.

When asked about Joan’s cheese habits, Neuby said “She loves cheese, she goes crazy for it.” Joan also has a more low key side as most members of the greyhound family do. According to Neuby, Joan has been known to spend hours on end sleeping in at home. Now, this wouldn’t be a piece on someone/somedog named Joan Rivers if I didn’t get my Fashion Police on! If I were to score Joan on her fashion sense, she’d get a ten out of ten. When I met her, she was wearing a fabulous purple and gold head wrap adorned with a wine bottle design and a cozy grey sweater. I immediately complimented Joan and Liam on Joan’s stunning looks, as Liam remarked about Joan’s resemblance to a “little old Italian woman.” Altogether, I had a great time meeting this dog and getting to learn about a new breed. I’ll always remember this as the day that I met the great Joan Rivers.
