On Thursday Sept. 10, at approximately 3:45 p.m. an unidentified pedestrian was killed on Main Street after climbing underneath a tractor trailer.
The tractor trailer was stopped in traffic between Church and South Chestnut Street when the individual climbed underneath. The unaware driver proceeded to drive down Main Street. The individual was then dislodged, getting caught under the vehicle and dragged down the street. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.
The New Paltz Police Department responded to the scene at 3:55 p.m. where they found the deceased pedestrian in the roadway near the Wallkill Bridge.
According to the New Paltz Police Department’s press release, witnesses to the accident saw the pedestrian being dragged down Main Street until the vehicle was stopped on Libertyville Road.
The police investigation closed down Main Street from North Front Street to Springtown Road until 9 p.m.
The vehicle operator was interviewed by officers and was cooperative with the investigation. The police investigation shows that the driver was at no fault, so no they will not be facing any charges.
The pedestrian’s information has not been released yet by officers because they are waiting on family notification.
