If you are looking for a volunteer opportunity to make a genuine difference this winter, Hope On A Mission (HOAM) is the place for you. Based out of Poughkeepsie, HOAM serves as a beacon in the community for love, compassion and most of all, hope. In their outreach, HOAM provides hot breakfast, bagged takeaways, clothing, hygiene products and other essentials on the street corner every Saturday morning, rain or shine, from 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. at 462 Main Street as well as 2-4 at South Clinton Street. Each Saturday night, volunteers can again be found again in the same locations from 6 – 8 p.m. serving dinner. They also offer a Tuesday night outreach at 600 Main Street from 6 – 8 p.m. providing dinner and essentials.
“We believe that through genuine compassion, we can make a difference in the presence of struggle by offering hope for the future,” their mission statement states.
They do exactly this, forming connections with regulars and anyone in attendance at outreach events. The Founder, CaraMia Bacchiochi, formed this organization to become “the women she needed” when she herself faced struggles with addiction and homelessness. There is no judgment here– only compassion, support and care. This volunteer opportunity forms lasting and meaningful connections. People in need are met where they are and are given support all throughout their journey. Participants are connected with more social services, and programs in our area that can better equipped them to make significant life improvements. HOAM knows that love is a basic human right, and makes sure to provide an ample amount along with the other food and goods it donates to the community of Poughkeepsie.
To volunteer with HOAM, arrive 30 minutes before serving time for set up with whatever donations you can manage; all is accepted and encouraged. Food, clothing, hygiene products and more are all needed. Tell them that you are here to help and you will be included into the fold of other supremely dedicated volunteers.
