While nothing has been set in stone, we at The New Paltz Oracle are happy with Student Association (SA) Production’s attempt to have a more student-represented spring concert. The politics that strangled the process last year can now be avoided by simply bringing an act that students actually want to see. With a brand new and diverse board this year, SA Productions is currently putting together a festival for the spring with music, food and games. The recent realization that Toni Hokanson’s name will be present on the ballot on Nov. 8 as an option for New Paltz’s town supervisor, despite her public withdrawal from the race, has us at The New Paltz Oracle troubled. Whether you are of the opinion that the withdrawl announcement on the cover of The New Paltz Times was an attempt for publicity or not, the fact remains that Hokanson’s name appearing on the ballot after rescinding her candidcay, so to speak, is proof of flawed election laws that need to be reviewed and revised. SUNY New Paltz President Donald Christian assembled a student advisory group with 15 to 18 students as a way for him and the administration to learn about SUNY New Paltz and keep in touch with students needs and interests. The students on this group will include a diverse group including non-traditional students, transfer students and athletes. They will be speaking to the administration about their experience at SUNY New Paltz.
