*Gasp* could it be? In the year 2018? A podcast recommendation?
You bet, dude.
Podcasts are kinda dorky, I’m not gonna pretend like they’re not. But I really like them as a way to stay on top of the ever-changing world around me! This one offers a quick yet extensive take on the news, with equal regards to fun cultural stuff and the events of the world.
“Keep It!” with Ira Madison is “a show about pop culture, politics, and what happens when they smack into each other at alarming speed.” This podcast is part of Crooked Media, a neat media and news group focused on engaging and informing people, while interjecting humor and frankness. The company is the home of other successful podcasts like “Pod Save America,” another great informative podcast that routinely snatches Donald Trump’s toupee.
Ira Madison’s awesome twitter personality is how I found out about the show. Even if you aren’t a podcast person, toss him a follow (@ira) for cool, socially conscientious, intersectional humor. The show is titled “Keep It!” because that is his signature catchphrase, basically meaning “no thanks” to any idiocy the internet has to offer.
Madison was formerly a culture writer for The Daily Beast and GQ. Each week on the podcast he’s joined by comedians, journalists, actors and activists and they delve into the week’s news. This week, they dissected Run The Jewels’ frontman Killer Mike’s battle with the NRA, comedian Tiffany Haddish’s story that somebody BIT Beyonce at a party, and a bunch of other issues.
To sum it up, this podcast is a great way to stay up to date and informed about both politics and culture, two things that super interest me (especially as an Arts & Entertainment writer). If podcasts aren’t your thing, I get it! But definitely give this one a shot, either on Apple Podcasts or whatever other podcasting forums that aren’t as good as Apple Podcasts.
