Musician of the Week: Chris Davenport

Chris Davenport

YEAR: Third-year

MAJOR: Creative Writing

HOMETOWN: Cortland, N.Y.

What is your instrument of choice? Why?

Guitar. For a long time I thought it was going to be drums. I played drums in 2nd until 12th grade. I kinda had several flirts with guitar but I wasn’t good at it. I went to a Wilco concert about 9th grade and something about that album, ‘A Ghost is Born,’ -— something about it hit me. After that concert I went straight home, picked up a guitar and just didn’t stop.

Who are you currently listening to?

Muddy Waters, Al Green, Sam Cooke, Jay-Z.

Who are your main influences?

Jeff Tweedy, Elmore James, Seu Jorge, Neil Young.

What do you do with music on/off-campus?

The musical endeavors in my life right now are Ten Speed, a band I’m in with Tom O’Malley, Avery Maracek and Matt Dorsi. We’re playing out more this year. Matt is also producing an album of just solo stuff for me.

What will you do with your musical future?

Keep on the path I’m on right now. Continue to play out more. I’m addicted to playing shows, I really can’t find any words to describe the way it makes me feel. Just being up there and putting yourself out there. It’s the most pure form of yourself. Anyone who comes to a Ten Speed show or hears a recording of me would know more about me than people I’ve been talking to for years.
