Nestled between bookstores on the corner of Church Street is a multi-faceted and rapidly growing town staple. Scry Chappelle is marketed as a “boutique night cafe,” but has far more to offer. Their services include selling alternative and goth-inspired clothing, a new scene for local artists and musicians, a distinct menu riddled with vegan options and now, their newest edition: a refurbished bar scene.
Tom and Amy Scry, the couple that owns the boutique and night cafe, recently got their liquor license after having more than a year of successful business. They’ve been hosting three weekly events: “static,” “paradise” and “purgatory,” inviting a 21+ crowd in after 8 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, offering a plethora of entertaining events right in the heart of the village.
Previously, the location at 3B Church St. was home to Arrowood Outpost, a beer bar that closed down in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With the bar still fully intact from the Outpost, the Scrys went through the lengthy application process for a liquor license.
On Jan. 14, the Scrys posted three threads that spelt out “SIN” to their Instagram, @scry_chappelle. The post highlighted their weekly event announcements, along with a quote officially announcing in all caps: “now serving alcohol.”
To further extend the all-encompassing experience, psychic tarot readers such as Tyler Clynes and Lauren Shields share their witchy wisdom with patrons. Special performances are conducted by Carrie Phoenix and Scarlett Hexx, both of whom are burlesque entertainers and artists from the Hudson Valley region.
To further add to their gothic appeal, the entire scene is painted in shades of black and red, with vibrant beams, glistening disco balls and spotlights shining down. The dynamism of this location encompasses the weekend scene in downtown New Paltz, intricately combining several beloved pastimes as well as artsy sources of entertainment.
While out on a bar crawl with friends, the lights beaming out the window of a tattoo shop seem that much more inviting, and the Scry’s have uniquely combined these festivities. At Scry Chappelle, you can indulge in a beverage and wait in line to be poked by local tattoo artist, Celina Coma, at her flash tattoo shop.
Couples and friends gather around for Kat Koan, a Berlin-based artist, who creates caricature-like artwork via in-person commissions. Koan refers to this as her “Undead Portraiture” work, which has been an absolute hit.
The static nights on Thursdays feature music and clips based around the works of a specific filmmaker. Recent themes have included Jordan Peele and Sofia Coppola, with upcoming events inspired by the works of The Wachowskis and Rob Zombie.
Each week on Friday and Saturday, they feature local DJs and talent. Over the past few weeks, a multitude of DJs have showcased their sets – Grand Format, Shredder, Akbar, Cyberimp, Baybee, Hororhaus and most recently, Dalex and Midna Mayhem.
