The State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz men’s and women’s swimming teams kicked off their season on Oct. 12 at home in Elting Pool, where they hosted an alumni swim meet. Their season truly begin against Cortland on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 1 p.m.
“I’d say about 50 alumni came back for the meet, and it’s an annual event. It always takes place on Columbus Day weekend. The meet is just for fun, and it’s just a way for the alumni to get to know the current team better than their faces and times, and of course it’s to get together with other alumni,” said Katherine Donlevy, a 2019 alumna. “The current swimmers always swim the events in full, but the alumni like to break it down into relays for almost everything because we are much more out of shape than the swimmers, plus we earned our right to be a little lazy. After the meet, the alumni went out to dinner at Maint Street Bistro. Coming back as an alumna felt super strange, but New Paltz and the pool still feel like home.”
Last year, the women’s team finished their season 4-2 with wins against Adelphi University, Ramapo College, Purchase College and Oneonta, and they finished fourth of nine teams at the State University of New York Athletic Conference meet. The men’s team was 3-3, winning against Adelphi University, Purchase College and Oneonta, and they finished fourth of eight teams at the SUNYAC meet.
