Women’s Tennis Goes For Gold

The New Paltz Women’s Tennis team has finished their regular season and is moving on to the NCAA Division III Championships, which begins on May 12. The SUNYAC champions finished the season with a 15-4 record and recently won the New Paltz Tournament that they hosted over the course of alumni weekend. Much like the NCAA Basketball Championship Tournament, 64 teams are put into a single bracket based on seeding. The team will take on Simmons College in the first round on Friday in Amherst, Mass. After a successful season, the ladies and their coach are confident going into the championship tournament. “This is the strongest team we’ve ever sent,” Head Coach Robert Bruley said. As her final season comes to a close, fourth-year tennis player Lindsey Garyn said she doesn’t have many regrets. In fact, there may only be one. “I regret it now going to Tampa for two years,” said Garyn. “I wish I spent all four years in New Paltz.” Garyn has been one of the top players for the New Paltz Tennis team since her arrival after transferring from a Div. II school, the University of Tampa. Originally, Garyn had played soccer until 10th grade and decided then that she would rather make the switch to tennis. Tennis Team Aims for Divisions

With a current record of 13-4, the New Paltz Tennis team is hoping to finish the final three matches in their spring season and compete in the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Championships in May. Head Coach Robert Bruley said he believes their spring season has been a lot tougher than the one they finished this fall, due in part to the non-conference games against private schools the Hawks have faced.
