Well, it’s not going to be a happy ending; the name of the show tells us that right from the start.
Two teenagers, a possible psychopath and a rebellious seeking adventurer, leave their boring town to go on a dark exploration that ends up becoming even more of a horror story.
If you like gore and romance, the netflix original, “The End of the F***ing World” could lure you right into their world. Each episode in the season is about 20 minutes long, so watching the season in one shot is pretty easy to do. I wish there were more than eight episodes because the characters, James (Alex Lawther) and Alyssa (Jessica Barden), are in multiple major conflicts in the last few episodes. James and Alyssa’s relationship develops throughout the show, and it’s strange how you end up rooting for them to escape the challenges they face.
Just a heads up, this may contain spoilers, so beware!
The most shocking moment is the murder in the show. It’s graphic and is quite disturbing, so having a buddy next to you would be my recommendation. The characters try to clean the floor with bleach and make the scene not look like a heinous event had just occurred, the fight leading to the murder. The two detectives, who I ended up loving as a duo, go on a wild hunt for the killers.
When you realize this next detail, it could change your perception of the whole plot. It’s that James’ voiceover is in the past tense in the show until the very last line, while Alyssa is speaking in the present tense in her monologues.
“I’ve just turned 18,” he said. “And I think I understand what people mean to each other.”
“The End of the F***ing World,” is based on a comic book series by Charles Forsman. There is talk of a possible second season for Netflix. The ending of the comic gives a better sense of resolution, even though it is similar to the show’s ending.
