Logic’s “Ultra 85” is the eighth studio project from the Maryland-raised rapper.
While having an extensive discography, this is the first of Logic’s albums that I have listened to. Despite being his most recent LP, I would say that “Ultra 85” was a great starting point into the rapper’s portfolio.
There are several aspects of this project that I heavily enjoyed, but I believe the best of which is the lyricism. In “Innerstellar,” Logic discusses the importance for anyone to think about oneself and to not reflect on the “artificial” internet lives of others. Logic most effectively illustrates this message when he sings about people finding “synthetic satisfaction” from liking posts on social media. The soft, cloud-like instrumentals and featured artist Lucy Rose’s delicate vocals strongly complement Logic on this track.
“Fear” is my second favorite song from “Ultra 85.” Here, Logic candidly discusses his traumatic childhood and how, as he grew older, he learned not to let his tough upbringing dictate the way he lives his adult life. The production on this track is playful and uplifting, which works incredibly well with Logic’s optimistic tone.
Other favorites of mine from the LP include “Deja Vu,” “Favela” and “Mission Control.”
I think the word that best describes this album is “determined.” Logic had a clear vision of what he wanted to say and how he wished to relay those ideas. “Ultra 85” was a fantastic introduction for me to the veteran rapper, and I look forward to checking out his previous works.
