LOU REID

Year: Graduate
Major: English
Hometown: Queens, N.Y.

What’s your instrument of choice and why?

Drums, because they move music. They can be booming and dominating, but they also can be delicate and reserved, driving rhythm and building a song’s foundation. all the while.

What are you involved with musically?

Young Neighbors

Who are your biggest influences?

The Clash’s Topper Headon because he brought subtlety to punk rock drumming. The National’s Bryan Devendorf because he’s constantly reworking the standard 4/4 rock beat. Prince and Sheila E. because I like to dance.

Who have you been listening to lately?

The xx, Grizzly Bear, Flying Lotus, The London Souls, Elvis Costello, Nick Drake. The Hold Steady, always.

What’s your plan for the future?

Teaching English overseas. Recording an album with Young Neighbors. Graduating and reading all the books and listening to all the music and watching all the movies I’ve been meaning to.

Any advice for aspiring musicians?

Play what you enjoy, play slow before you play fast and practice with a metronome.
