The Deep End: Salvation Recording Co.

Located right off of Main Street in New Paltz, Salvation Recording Co. describes itself as “a small place to produce records in an environment that feels like home. Home with a bunch of sweet gear and trained professionals.” Their mission is to make professional records in a comfortable and welcoming setting that rivals the more stressful or stuffy atmosphere of a typical recording session.

Salvation Recording Co. started as a record label as well as a recording studio many moons ago. When I asked Salvation’s Chief Engineer Chris Daly exactly when the project started, he said “I feel like it was so long ago, I couldn’t even tell you.”

In the beginning, it was a rocky start. Functioning as both a record label and recording studio presented a lot of problems for the company, and they found that it was easier to proceed as solely a recording studio.

“We only really made it one or two releases before we threw in the towel on the label, and I transitioned to solely recording/producing,” Daly said. “We had these grand dreams of being able to support artists in every way; records, production, merchandise, et cetera, but it was too much financially to really do right by our artists. So the name of the label became the name of the physical studio and I never looked back.”

Despite this, their recording studio behind Main St. persists as a great resource for musicians from all over. Artists recorded at Salvation include Active Bird Community, Vagabon, Porches, Frankie Cosmos, and Ghost King. As of last week, the band Diet Cig (formed in New Paltz) was recording their fourth album at Salvation Recording Co.

“I’m really lucky to have been able to work with so many great artists in my short career,” Daly said.

Among some of his favorite projects, he lists Infinite Worlds by Vagabon, Dunbar Swamp by Ghost King and Slow Dance in the Cosmos by Porches.

“[These] all stand out but it’s really hard not to list them all. Currently, I’m in the middle of Diet Cig’s new LP and I’m super excited for people to hear it.”
